UKG Classix Vol.11
MJ Cole kicks off volume eleven with his top ten hit Crazy Love, featuring the vocals of UKG diva Elisabeth Troy. Released in the spring of 2000 on Talkin Loud, Crazy Love would spend three weeks in the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. The track would also feature on Cole’s first album Sincere, that would reach the top 20 of the UK Albums Chart.
Next up is another top 10 hit from the year 2000, Girls Like Us by B-15 Project Featuring Crissy D & Lady G. Originally released on Oracabessa Records, which was set up by Ali Campbell and Brian Travers (both known as lead singer and sax player of UB40, respectively). The track was then picked up by Relentless and would peak at #7 in the charts.
Track #3 in the mix comes from UK Garage legend Wookie with his UKG anthem Battle, that featured vocals from Lain. The track is yet another top ten hit from 2000 and was released on S2S Recordings which is run by Jazzie B of Soul II Soul, and who Wookie would write and produce for before releasing his UKG anthem.
The next track is a cover of The Pointers Sisters 1981 classic Slow Hand by Jayson Torres. The remix featured in the mix is by Sovereign, who’s most famous remix is of Pink’s song There You Go. Slow Hand would feature on Pure Garage II compilation mixed by none other than UK Garage legend DJ EZ.
Track #5 comes from soul legend Angie Stone and her classic No More Rain (In This Cloud). The remix comes from Wookie that was released in the UK in 2000 on Arista. The track featured Stone’s second album Black Diamond.
The final track of volume eleven is a Todd Edwards remix of Walk Away by Håkan Lidbo. Another track that featured on the Pure Garage II compilation and championed by DJ EZ.
One of my personal favourite Todd “The God” Edwards remixes which remember purchasing from City Sounds in Holborn.
